“Am I a good boy?”
On the last night of Royal Family Kids Camp we do a balloon release. It’s a special night where the campers write their thoughts on a note, attach it to a balloon, and release it to symbolize letting go of their troubles. As mentor, Michael, knelt next to his camper, Lincoln, to help tie his note to his balloon, Lincoln asked, “Am I a good boy?” Those words struck deep into Michael’s heart, and he had to turn away and choke back tears. How could Lincoln possibly think that he wasn’t a good boy? What had happened in his life to bring him to this conclusion? Despite all of the pain and hardships this little boy had endured, all he wanted was to be affirmed that he was good, valuable and loved. It was in that moment that Michael knew he was going to step up to become Lincoln’s mentor in the coming school year. Michael wanted to change the narrative that Lincoln believed…that he wasn’t enough. He wanted to affirm Lincoln that he is worthy of love…no strings attached.
With your help these kids can just be kids and recognize how loved they are.
