“An amazing place for kids like me…”
At the age of two, Emma was placed into foster care. At five years old, she was adopted. When she was eleven, she had the opportunity to attend Royal Family Kids Camp for the first time, and it changed her life. We will let her tell you the story:
Hi! My name is Emma, and I am now 18 years old. I loved Royal Family Kids Camp because it was an amazing place for kids like me who were in the foster care system.
Camp was the best week of my life. You see, I was sexually abused by my Dad. When I came to camp for the first time, it was during the time that my Dad was in court. He was later sent to prison. At 11 years old, I didn’t know how to process all of this. Thankfully, my camp mentor, Rachel, helped me through the hardest season of my life. All I needed was someone to listen. Rachel did that for me. I was so nervous to come to camp for the first time, but after spending time with Rachel, it was my favorite week of the year. I came back the next year and was again matched with Rachel. Those two weeks were the best weeks of my life.
After my final year of camp, I knew that I wanted to be a “Rachel” for another camper. Camp had such a huge impact on my life, and I wanted other foster kids to have this same experience. When I was 17, I came back to camp as a Teen Assistant, and this year I was chosen to be a Mentor. As a mentor, I was finally able to give kids the same experience I had…a listening ear and a safe, fun place to just be a kid. We gave them a week they would never forget.
Emma has become an incredible young woman who is excited to give back, and we need more stories like hers! Will you give today so local foster kids can have the best week of their life? All kids deserve to have a listening ear and a safe, fun place where they can just be kids.
